Stuie
With a baby coming on the way, and me being pretty much an overprotective guy, I want to get into guns. My parent's aren't happy about it, never grew up with any knowledge of them.So my grandfather gave me a Davis Industries P-380 and a couple boxes of ammo.I know from a quick search this isn't a great gun. But it was a really nice gesture. I have no idea on to dissasemble and clean this thing. Where to get started. Also I am looking in getting my CHL before the new year. I know we got some gun people on here, and Nick. So guys any advice or anything man, let me know. And know I won't give up my gun or my right to own them, my wife is all for it. And this will probably end up being hers to carry with her.
Big Boss
I'm starting to really get into guns right now, too. I submitted my handgun permit on Thursday and I hope to get it on or sometime before Wednesday. I've got my eye on a Glock 21/21C, which is their full size .45 ACP model, for "home defense." If I should ever carry, I think I'd go with the Glock 30, the sub-compact .45 ACP. I really hope that I'm approved, I can't wait to get my gun. NickReppinThe909
i carry a variety opf guns but for home defense you should go with a 1911 its bare bones simple and super reliable and its a .45 so it has plenty of knockdown power. you will also want to pick up hollowpoint ammunition so you dont shoot through the target and hit an innocent person. a shotgun is a lot better for home defense due to the availability of less-than-lethal loads (in the link below)http://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/lesslethalammo.htmland if you want to take down your target indefinately here are some good loads. i personally recommend the "pitbull" round seeing as it has saved my ass once beforehttp://www.deltaforce.com/catalog/12gaugeammo.html
dafunk5446
Welcome to the addictive world of guns, Stuie. Its a downward spiral from here, man.... On another note, check out www.gunbroker.com, you can pretty much find any gun you could ever want on there. I would go with a gun like what Big Boss mentioned, a glock is a great gun. Its reliable (I have had so many problems with rugars and colts), shoots decent (not the most accurate), and is very light in comparison to other guns. If you are looking for a carry I would suggest a .40 cal, they are the perfect mix of a 9mm and a .45. I find .45's to be clunky and just plain overkill. Sure a .45 has the stopping power of a mack truck but I can get 3 times as many rounds off more accurately with my .40 then my .45. The .40 also holds a couple more rounds (which can make the difference if your not the best shot), and if a person can take 12 rounds off a .40 and keep coming....well then they deserve to live cause thats freakin amazing. Also if your interested in rifles at all, I would check out a milled Arsenal ak47, got one a couple years ago and it is the best gun I have ever used. joelhookah
Welcome Stuie! I am into guns as well you can check out my stuff on the pistol post. What gun to get is a great question. Glocks are good guns, I personally prefer the Springfield XD line. I have shot both extensively and I was into guns a bit while I was in the military. First thing you have to figure out is if you want a carry pistol, or something that is going to sit in the dresser. That really tells you what size you want to get, standard, subcompact or compact. Glock and Springfield have pretty much every size in 9MM, .40 (think glock might use 10mm, not sure) and .45. I personally go with .40 because you have a higher capacity versus a .45 and you still get great stopping power with less kick. Also, a Smith & Wesson revolver is a great gun for a beginner because it is super simple, pull the trigger and it goes boom every time. They are also a tad cheaper than a Glock or an XD. Great for concealed carry, gotta love them. Good luck on your quest to find YOUR ideal weapon. Try and find a range where you can rent guns and shoot 100 rounds through each, that will help you pick not only your gun but your caliber. Evildave
Since i live in Canada, things are much less dangerous up here ( especially in my little french hood ). but myself, if i ever got myself any kind of weaponry ( most probably for hunting or general shooting), i would totally go old school with something like a M1 carbine or a Garand replica. NUBBS
I have a Davis Industries P-380, too!!! It will jam every once in a while due to some little notch that will appear after a few rounds, so you have to keep it clean.

NickReppinThe909
alot of company's produce 1911's the best being kimber or good old SAthe pitbull round is a 1/2oz slug with 00 buckshot keeping it companyross it sounds like you are leaning towards the 1911 which is an awesome choice, i have a buddy that works at/co-owns a gunshop and if you want a good deal shoot me a pm and i can go up and grab some prices for you and they can FFL them to a local gunshop for you.another great gun to consider would be a sig P250 which is a "modular" handgun therefore you are able to build it for a different caliber, size class and barrel lengthQUOTE (dafunk5446 @ Nov 16 2008, 03:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Welcome to the addictive world of guns, Stuie. The downside to the Kimber or Wilson Combat is that they're about twice, if not three times, as much as a Glock. I think the Glock will be my first gun, but I want my second to be a Kimber Eclipse.1,666th post by the way
newjacksm
I thought Hollowpoint for hand guns were illigal. Anyways I just went hunting the other day I was using my Marlin 30-30, I am having my fathers Browning 30-06 passed down to me. Thing shoots like a mother. I would suggest you go to a range and practice a lot. I love going to a range and shooting off a box of rounds. For home defense I would just pick up a semi 20 gauge shot gun. The way I look at it any gun can kill anyone its lead being pumped into some ones body. There really is no need to get a Magnum,38 special(you get my point) some heat if anything it'll make you less accurate.20 Gauge would be my choice. Plus you can take it to go hunting which is by far one of my favorite hobbies.P.S. what you have is good go to the range learn your guns range/accuracy. If you dont feel comfortable with it get a shotgun so you dont even need to aim point in the burglars direction and they will sure be hurting. The only gun i keep loaded and ready to go is a bolt action 410 shotgun. Its a tiny gun, but i live in a small house and would love to get my saftey deposite back and protect my self. Trust me a 410 wont go through someone, but they wont enjoy it either esp inside my house. If i was out side i would go for something larger, but im ok with out it. With it I can walk into any gun store and walk out with a handgun without the obligatory waiting-day period and the permit lasts for 3 years. In that time-frame I can buy as many handguns as I want, whenever I want, without having to wait. You could also say that it gives me the right to open carry.
